Flood & water

Selling a flood-damaged car

Water gets into wiring, sensors and the engine, and the damage can surface months later. That’s why buyers price it carefully, and why describing the flood honestly is the only way to keep your offer intact.

Flood damaged car

What moves the offer

How high the water got
Water to the floorboards is a very different car from water over the dashboard.
Fresh or salt water
Salt water is far more corrosive.
Did the engine run in water?
Starting a flooded engine can bend internal parts. If you tried, say so.
Title status
If insurance paid a flood claim, the title is likely branded flood or salvage.

Say this on the offer form

Offers are adjusted at pickup when the car doesn’t match the description. Be specific about:

  • Water line height (floor, seats, dash)
  • Fresh or salt water
  • Whether you tried to start it afterward
  • Any insurance claim and title brand
If the offer changes at pickup

Per Peddle, an updated offer is made when there’s a discrepancy, and you can decline it. Don’t sign the title until you’re happy with the number in front of you.

Worth knowing

Disclose flood damage on any sale, private or otherwise. Selling a flood car as clean is the kind of thing that ends up in court, and many states require a title brand anyway. An instant-offer buyer expects it and prices for it.

Don’t try to start it again before pickup, and pull the battery’s negative cable if you can do so safely; it reduces the chance of electrical shorts.

Paperwork

You’ll need the title in your name, a photo ID, and every key you have. If there’s a loan on the car, read selling a car with a loan first. Can’t find the title? Start with our no-title guide. After pickup, follow the after-you-sell checklist.

Questions

Will anyone buy a flood car?

Yes. Buyers resell parts, metal and sometimes repairable cars through salvage channels. Expect less than a dry car, but not nothing.

How can I tell if a car I’m buying next was flooded?

Run the VIN through NMVTIS at vehiclehistory.gov and look for silt under carpets and corrosion under the dash.
