Why it happens
The offer is priced from your answers. When the driver or inspector finds something different, the buyer re-prices. Per Peddle’s help center, the offer holds if the information was accurate; discrepancies or missing major parts lead to an updated offer, and you can decline it.
The usual causes
- Catalytic converter missing: often stolen without the owner knowing. Look under the car, or ask a mechanic.
- Mileage higher than entered: read the odometer; don’t estimate.
- “Starts and drives” but it doesn’t on the day. If it’s unreliable, say it doesn’t run.
- Damage not mentioned: including hail, rust-through and interior damage.
- Parts removed: battery, wheels, stereo.
- Title issues: a salvage brand or a lien you forgot about.
Protect yourself
- Photograph the car in daylight the day before pickup.
- Answer the form with the car in front of you.
- If the number changes, ask exactly why, in writing if possible.
- You don’t have to accept. Don’t sign the title until you agree with the amount.
Questions
Can the offer go up at pickup?
Some buyers’ terms allow adjustments either way, but in practice changes are usually down. Accuracy is the best protection.
