Selling a totaled car
“Totaled” is an insurance decision, not a mechanical one: it means repairs would cost more than the insurer is willing to pay. Many totaled cars still have plenty of value to the right buyer.
We’re an independent guide, not the buyer. Offers come from Peddle, a nationwide car-buying service, and we may earn a referral fee when you sell through our form.

What moves the offer
- Who owns it now
- If you accepted a full payout, the insurer usually takes the car. If you kept it, you own it and can sell it.
- Title brand
- Most states require a salvage title after a total loss. The car can still be sold; it just can’t be registered for the road until it’s repaired and inspected.
- What the damage is
- A car totaled for hail damage is very different from one totaled in a front-end collision.
- Drivable or not
- Still matters for loading and for resale value.
Say this on the offer form
Offers are adjusted at pickup when the car doesn’t match the description. Be specific about:
- That the car has a salvage (or pending salvage) title
- Cause of the total loss: collision, flood, hail, fire, theft recovery
- Whether it starts and drives
- Missing or removed parts
Per Peddle, an updated offer is made when there’s a discrepancy, and you can decline it. Don’t sign the title until you’re happy with the number in front of you.
Worth knowing
Your state may require you to apply for the salvage title yourself after an owner-retained settlement. Do that before you sell so the paperwork you hand the driver is correct. Check the vehicle’s current title brand at vehiclehistory.gov if you’re unsure.
Paperwork
You’ll need the title in your name, a photo ID, and every key you have. If there’s a loan on the car, read selling a car with a loan first. Can’t find the title? Start with our no-title guide. After pickup, follow the after-you-sell checklist.
Questions
Is it better to keep a totaled car or let the insurer take it?
If the insurer’s deduction for keeping it (the salvage value) is less than what you can sell it for, keeping and selling can come out ahead. Get an offer before you decide.
Can a salvage title ever become clean again?
No. After repair and a state inspection it can become a “rebuilt” title, but the history stays on record.
