Selling a car with a blown engine
An engine or transmission replacement can cost more than the car is worth. When that’s the math, selling it with the problem is usually the smart move. The body, interior and other parts still have value.
We’re an independent guide, not the buyer. Offers come from Peddle, a nationwide car-buying service, and we may earn a referral fee when you sell through our form.

What moves the offer
- The rest of the car
- A clean body and interior on a popular model is worth real money to rebuilders.
- What failed, exactly
- Head gasket, thrown rod, seized engine, slipping transmission: the more specific, the better.
- Mileage and year
- Newer cars with a failed engine often attract rebuilders who will drop in a used motor.
Say this on the offer form
Offers are adjusted at pickup when the car doesn’t match the description. Be specific about:
- What the mechanic told you (if you had it diagnosed)
- Whether it starts at all
- Smoke, knocking, or fluid leaks
- Whether it can roll and steer for loading
Per Peddle, an updated offer is made when there’s a discrepancy, and you can decline it. Don’t sign the title until you’re happy with the number in front of you.
Worth knowing
The repair-or-sell rule of thumb: get a written repair quote, then get an instant offer. If the quote is more than the difference between what the car would be worth fixed and the offer you have now, selling is the better deal.
Paperwork
You’ll need the title in your name, a photo ID, and every key you have. If there’s a loan on the car, read selling a car with a loan first. Can’t find the title? Start with our no-title guide. After pickup, follow the after-you-sell checklist.
Questions
Will the offer drop if the engine is worse than I thought?
If you described it accurately as not running or with a known engine failure, there’s nothing to “discover” at pickup. Offers change when the description was off.
